Live Microsurgery Demonstration
Welcome Message from Course Director
Rokuya Tanikawa, M.D.

We are pleased to announce that the 11th Far East Neurosurgical Live Microsurgery Course will be held from July 3rd to 8th, 2027, in the Main Conference Room at Sapporo Teishinkai Hospital.

This live course originated from the 1st FEN Video Conference held in November 2001 at the former Abashiri Neurosurgical Rehabilitation Hospital. Since 2003, we introduced live surgery demonstrations prior to the video conference, aiming to provide participants with practical opportunities to learn revascularization techniques in cerebral aneurysm surgery as well as skull base surgery demonstrations originally led by the late Dr. Takanori Fukushima. During the 11 years leading up to my relocation to Sapporo Teishinkai Hospital in 2012, we conducted 11 FEN Video Conference Live Surgery Courses. Before Aesculap Academy began hosting the event in 2014, a total of 13 FEN Video Conferences had been held, which subsequently evolved into 10 successful courses under the name of Far East Neurosurgical Live Microsurgery Course up through 2026. Counting from 2001, this upcoming gathering marks our 23rd live surgery course.

Starting in 2027, the course will be officially hosted by Sapporo Teishinkai Hospital. As in previous years, a Bypass Hands-on Course utilizing hydrophilic artificial blood vessels will be held on the first day, July 3rd. Prior to hands-on practice, participants will attend lectures covering foundational knowledge essential for microvascular anastomosis.

On Sunday, July 4th, educational lectures will be delivered by leading domestic and international experts covering cerebrovascular, skull base, and functional neurosurgery. The program is designed to offer insights into world-class neurosurgical practice.

From Monday, July 5th through Thursday, July 8th, 2 to 3 live surgical demonstrations will be performed daily. Each day begins at 7:45 AM with pre-operative case discussions focused on pathophysiology, surgical anatomy, surgical strategy, and complication avoidance. Following each day's procedures, a post-operative summary session will take place, followed the next morning by detailed video reviews and discussion based on edited footage from the previous day.

This is a highly intensive 1-week course offering a truly practical learning experience in cerebrovascular and skull base surgical anatomy. We sincerely look forward to your participation.
